Yorkshire Terrier

The very name conjures a mental picture of a playfully-natured, toy-like, immensely-huggable and very determined little dog!

Used originally to catch rats in the county of Yorkshire in England, the breed has become smaller with time, yet grown significantly in the luxury pet world as one of the most popular breeds world-wide.

Notoriously choosy about the food he eats, Yorkies are easy to convince that what his human eats, he should too!  Unfortunately, this type of feeding has huge implications for the health and well-being of the dog.

Yorkies, as any owner will tell you, are unlike any other breed.  Apart from their endearing characteristic natures, they have 3 unique physical requirements that need to be nutritionally met – ones that cannot be supplied in human food or at the very most, in the correct quantities for a Yorkie:

A coat similar to human hair and a sensitive skin.
A Yorkie’s straight, silky hair is never shed – it grows constantly. 
He also has no undercoat and his skin is thus more exposed to wind, cold and pollution which weakens it.

A long life expectancy

A Yorkie may live to be 15 or even 20 years old.  The older he gets, the greater his vulnerability to heart, kidney and joint weaknesses.

Greater requirements in terms of palatability

A Yorkie has a lesser sense of smell (60 million olfactory cells) as compared to a German Shepherd (200 million olfactory cells).  His food therefore needs to be highly palatable and appeal to his limited sense of smell

In addition, the Royal Canin Yorkshire Terrier 28 food also provides joint protection through the inclusion of glucosamine and chondroitin.   Both nutrients are used in the prevention and treatment of arthrosis problems.  Glucosamine stimulates cell regeneration in cartilage and chondroitin slows down the enzymatic degradation of cartilage.  The earlier these ingredients are added to the diet, the better the chances of limiting the inevitable degeneration of cartilage in the Yorkie.

Yorkies – as with most mini breeds – are quite often subject to mouth and teeth problems.  This problem is linked to the feeding of inappropriate foods (his owner’s or a diet rich in tinned foods!) and the resultant formation of dental plaque and tartar.  These deposits are formed on the teeth and over time, cause inflammation of the gums and may lead to pain and a lack of appetite.  Further complications may also result if the condition is left without being examined by a veterinarian.
